In the last two weeks, City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) has received information of two incidents where a bear was observed in the Satellites Bouldering Area and in the Gregory Canyon Amphitheater, apparently attracted to unattended crash pads and backpacks. The same bear appears to be involved and is likely drawn to food scent and human sweat on the gear.

OSMP and the Flatirons Climbing Council (FCC) would like remind visitors that black bears can be dangerous, especially if they get habituated to food rewards gained from humans.

·  Please report bear activity to OSMP at 303-441-3440.

·  Plan your bouldering session or climb so that you do not leave unattended gear (please do not leave gear stashes behind).

·  Be mindful that food scent, food residue and sweat can attract bears and other animals to your gear.

·  If you are approached by a black bear stand your ground. If possible back away slowly while facing the bear. If the bear persists, yell at the bear in a clear tone, congregate with other visitors, control pets and throw rocks at the bear. If you are attacked by a black bear you should fight back.

·  Do not allow your unattended gear to become a food reward for a bear.

·  If it is safe to do so, make bears uncomfortable around bouldering areas and the bases of climbs. Yell at the bears, throw rocks and do not allow bears to get food rewards from humans.

A habituated bear is dangerous to the public and typically results in its destruction.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) are aware of the recent bear activity and OSMP Rangers will post specific informational signs if OSMP receives additional reports.
